COMPOSER & LYRICIST * ARRANGER * PIANIST & MUSIC DIRECTOR
Dewey Fleszar is an ASCAP Award winning composer, lyricist, arranger, pianist, and music director living in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently writing book, music, and lyrics for ELIZABETH, an original musical based on the true life history of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her more than five-decade long friendship and collaboration with Susan B. Anthony. With lyricist and bookwriter Emily C. Peters he is also writing music and co-lyrics for FIRST YEAR, an original musical that chronicles the lives and experiences of eight college freshmen.
His musical LET IT RAIN, written with lyricist and bookwriter Mkhululi Matyalana Ka Mabija, received a staged workshop at Cap 21 in 2011 and a 28-hour AEA reading at NYU in 2010. Also with Mabija, he co-authored the short musical SHAKA ZULU: A STORY OF THE ZULU NATION which received a reading at NYU in 2009. Their song "Sondela" from LET IT RAIN was orchestrated by TONY Award winning orchestrator Bruce Coughlin (Light in the Piazza; Urinetown; Grey Gardens). In 2011 he also composed the score for THE MONSTER WAR, a musical with book and lyrics by Sarah Underwood.
Since 2010 Dewey has been working with composer, lyricist, and bookwriter Laura Italiano as the arranger and music supervisor for her original musical PERP! THE CRIMINAL MUSICAL, which has received staged readings at The Dramatists Guild, Davenport Studios, and Emerging Artists Theater.
Dewey's work has been performed by Nikki M. James (TONY Award, Book of Mormon; Les Miserables), Gavin Creel (Olivier Award, Book of Mormon; Thoroughly Modern Millie), Janet Dickinson (Bullets Over Broadway; Billy Elliot), Grace Choi (Avenue Q, Off-Broadway), and Dimitri Moise (Book of Mormon, National Tour), among others. His work has been featured at Lincoln Center, Joe's Pub, 54 Below, Two Rivers Theater, and all around the country.
Dewey is an alumnus of NYU's Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program and the Ithaca College School of Music. He is a proud member of ASCAP and The Dramatists Guild and formerly served on the board of directors of AfterWork Theater Inc.
