DEWEY FLESZAR is a composer, arranger, music director, and pianist living and working in New York, NY.  He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts (2010) as well as a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the Ithaca College School of Music, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 2008.  

While at NYU, Dewey studied composition with Fred Carl and Mel Marvin and attended year-long Master classes with William Finn (...Spelling Bee, A New Brain) and Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party, See What I Wanna See).  He also participated in Master classes with Jeanine Tesori  (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline or Change), Winnie Holzman (Wicked, My So Called Life), and Pat Irwin.  In 2010 he wrote "LET IT RAIN" with lyricist/librettist Mkhululi Z. Mabija, a one-act African musical folk tale.  Also with Mabija he wrote the short musical SHAKA ZULU: A STORY OF THE ZULU NATION in 2009.

Dewey recently contributed songs to THE MONSTER WAR by Sarah Underwood and arrangements to PERP! THE CRIMINAL MUSICAL by Laura Italiano.  His songs have been heard at Joe's Pub, The New York Theatre Barn, and The Dramatist's Guild and have been performed by Gavin Creel, Nikki M. James, Cheryl Alexander, and others.  His song "Sondela" (words by Mabija) was orchestrated by Tony Award-Winning orchestrator Bruce Coughlin (Grey Gardens, Urinetown, Light in the Piazza).  In 2009 he was awarded the ASCAP Foundation Frederick Loewe Scholarship for promise and talent as a musical theatre composer.

During his undergraduate, he studied composition with Dana Wilson, Gregory Woodward and Sally Lamb and jazz piano/jazz arranging with Steve Brown.  He was awarded the Jack Downey Prize for excellence in vocal composition in 2007 and his works were performed by the Ithaca College Chorus, Orchestra, and Big-Band Ensembles.  He also participated in a compositional outreach program that introduced music composition to young children in area schools.

Current & future projects include continued development of LET IT RAIN, a book on the topic of melody in musical theatre, new choral works, and new cabaret songs.  Dewey is a proud member of ASCAP and 
The Dramatist's Guild.
